On June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, Draupadi Murmu was born into a Santali tribal family to Biranchi Narayan Tudu. Under the Panchayati Raj Systems, both her father and grandfather oversaw their respective villages.

Draupadi Murmu wed the late banker Shyam Charan Murmu, who passed away in 2014. The couple had a daughter named Itishri Murmu and two sons, both of whom died away.
