T20 World Cup 2024: Gavaskar Has A New Role For Virat and Rohit
There was a great deal of discussion around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s potential inclusion in the T20 World Cup 2024. The potential inclusion of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Indian cricket team for the T20 World Cup 2024 generated a lot of discussion, but the team’s decision to play Afghanistan in a T20I series after a 14-month break may have given selectors an early look at what they have in store.
After not competing in the sport’s short format since November 2022, both Rohit and Virat will be returning. Even though there are still uncertainties surrounding their selection for the T20 World Cup, Sunil Gavaskar believes that both of them will be selected, even if their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is unremarkable.
The renowned Indian batter stated in a recent interview with Star Sports that their background will be valuable in the T20 World Cup and that is why they ought to be chosen for the match.
Since that will be the current form, I believe the IPL form will be important. January is when the Afghanistan series starts. June is World Cup month. Therefore, priority should be given to the person whose performance in March, April, and May is good enough to warrant consideration. In addition, I’ll add that even if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have a mediocre IPL season but still score runs, you can’t score runs in every game. However, if they contribute well in five of the fourteen games, you’ll need to take advantage of their experience and can probably select them for the team, Gavaskar stated.
“I will also add that, because of their experience, and this is an unconventional idea, you can take them with the team if you are unable to select them in the 14 (15). Imagine the team’s confidence if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are in the dugout, he continued.
Due to “personal reasons”, Kohli will miss the opening Twenty20 International match against Afghanistan, head coach Rahul Dravid announced on Wednesday.
At the beginning of the media session, Dravid stated that Virat would miss the game tomorrow for personal reasons.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma will be opening the innings” for India in the series opener on Thursday, Dravid said, adding that the former captain of India will be available for the remaining two games of the three-match series.
After a 14-month break, both Rohit and Kohli are joining the T20 league again.
In November 2022, Kohli’s final match in the abbreviated format was India’s T20 World Cup semifinal loss to England in Australia.
