Iran Foreign Minister in Pakistan for talks after tit-for-tat air strikes

During his visit, Iran Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart and Pakistan caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar to put relations back on track.

At the height of tension in ties following the recent tit-for-tat attacks undertaken by the two nations, Iran Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian came in Islamabad on Monday at the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani.

Rahim Hayat Qureshi, Pakistan’s Additional Foreign Secretary for Afghanistan and West Asia, welcomed the Iranian Foreign Minister when he arrived at the Nur Khan airfield.

To mend fences, Abdollahian will meet with his Pakistani colleague Jilani and the country’s acting prime minister, Anwaar ul Haq Kakar.

Tehran began attacking militant positions in southwest Pakistan with missiles on January 16. Pakistan retaliated by initiating operations inside Iran on January 18.

An intelligence-based operation code-named “Marg Bar Sarmachar” effectively targeted “terrorist militant organizations,” specifically the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), according to a statement released by the Pakistan Army.

The most high-profile cross-border incursions in recent memory, according to Geo News, the tit-for-tat strikes have sparked concerns about increased instability in the Middle East since the conflict between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7.

According to a press release from the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran and Pakistan have recently decided to defuse the situation and closely coordinate their efforts to combat terrorism.

During their phone call, the Pakistani minister emphasized both nations’ geographical integrity and sovereignty, as did his Iranian colleague Abdollahian.

The ministry released a statement saying, “Today, Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani had a conversation with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian of Iran. The Foreign Minister emphasized Pakistan’s wish to collaborate with Iran in an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding, highlighting the two countries’ deep brotherly ties. The foreign minister emphasized that any cooperation must be based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
