Apple Vision Pro pre-orders begin: Here’s what to expect

The first “spatial computer” that Apple is offering for pre-order is the Vision Pro headset. As previously said, it will be accessible on February 2.

More information regarding the headset will be available on the pre-order page, but first, let’s talk about cost. The price is $3,499 for 256GB, $3,699 for 512GB, or $3,899 for 1TB of storage. All models are available with a one-year financing plan that includes monthly Apple Card installments.

For $499, you can get unlimited repairs for accidental damage protection, an “Express Replacement Service,” and round-the-clock priority access to Apple professionals with AppleCare+ for the Vision Pro. You will need an iPhone or iPad with Face ID to receive a measurement for the headband and light seal before placing your pre-order. Then, based on your eyesight, you can add one of two types of Zeiss optical inserts: reader inserts, which cost $99, or prescription inserts, which cost $149.

In an attempt to ease consumers’ transition to this brand-new offering in its lineup, Apple has created a nearly ten-minute “guided tour” video for the Vision Pro.

As for the contents in the box, these include the headset itself, a USB-C charging cable, a polishing cloth, a light seal cushion, a cover, a dual loop band, and – you won’t believe this – an actual charger. Now that we’re unclear, would Apple have been able to include a charger in the package if the iPhone had retailed at $3,499? Or would doing so “wastefully” cause it to suddenly lose interest in protecting the environment? Unless inflation goes out of control, we probably won’t find out.

So let’s get into the details. A 16-core Neural Engine, a 10-core GPU, an 8-core CPU with 4 efficiency and 4 performance cores, and 16GB of unified memory power the M2 chip that powers the headset. The unique R1 processor has 256GB/s of memory bandwidth and a photon-to-photon latency of 12 ms.

About photons, the screens can play video at 24 or 30 frames per second at refresh rates of 90, 96, and 100 Hz. With 23 million total pixels and a 7.5-micron pixel size, the tiny OLED panels cover 92% of the DCI-P3 colour space. Any device that supports AirPlay can be used to mirror your view in the Vision Pro.

Two high-resolution primary cameras, six tracking cameras facing the outside world, four eye-tracking cameras, a LiDAR scanner, four inertial measurement units, a flicker sensor, and an ambient light sensor are all included in the Vision Pro. In addition, it has six microphones, iris-based biometrics, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and Spatial Audio.

Two hours of “general use” and 2.5 hours of video viewing are stated as the battery life. The headset is functional even when it is charging. The Vision Pro weights between 600 and 650g; the variance can be attributed to the various headband and light seal combinations that are available. The weight of the standalone battery is 353g.
