MI6 spy: To gather intelligence, Huang was sent to China several times by the British agency MI6 when he began working on intelligence-related projects with them in 2015.

According to CNN, China has arrested a foreign national who headed a consulting firm abroad for alleged espionage on behalf of the UK. The Ministry of State Security (MSS), China’s civilian spy agency, announced in a statement that it had captured a person with the last name Huang who was heading a global consultancy and was collaborating with the British MI6.

Nevertheless, the agency failed to provide Huang’s entire name, gender, or nationality, as well as the name of the business they were employed by.

According to MSS’s statement, Huang began working with MI6 in 2015 on intelligence-related concerns. The British agency ordered Huang to visit China several times to gather intelligence and locate possible sources.

According to the MSS, MI6 trained Huang and supplied professional spy gear for communications and intelligence sharing.

It further claimed that Huang ultimately gave Britain 17 intelligence products, including many “national secrets.”

According to the legislation, Huang was granted access to consular visits from their native country during the MSS probe, it stated.

Additionally, CNN was sent to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) by the British Embassy in Beijing for comments regarding the case. But the FCDO took a while to reply to their plea.

This follows China’s months-long crackdown on foreign consultancy businesses, which CNN reported on.

The state security agencies said earlier in May of last year that they had seized multiple Capvision offices. Capvision is an advice network with headquarters located in Shanghai and New York.

The announcement followed the closure of the US corporate due diligence firm Mintz Group’s Beijing office and the interrogation of staff members at the local office of prestigious consulting firm Bain.

CNN reports that Beijing’s efforts to strengthen control over what it claims to be sensitive material related to national security included the measures above.

Later, in October, Capvision announced that it had effectively finished a national security examination under Chinese government supervision and developed fresh compliance strategies to alleviate worries.

The MSS, which is in charge of intelligence and counterintelligence both domestically and internationally, is allegedly used to maintain a low profile.

However, as CNN noted, it has recently increased public outreach by opening an account on WeChat, the widely used social networking site in China.

Additionally, the agency has made use of the platform to urge “all members of society” to support its efforts in combating foreign espionage, especially in light of the recent passing of a counter-espionage law that went into force in July.

Businesses are also uneasy about this law because they fear its broader application may expose them to greater legal risks.
