Iran began attacking Pakistan on Tuesday, claiming that the targets were camps for the extremist organization Jaish al-Adl.

According to the state-run IRNA news agency, the attack on Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni extremist group that primarily operates across the border in nuclear-armed Pakistan, used missiles and drones.

The strikes took place as regional tensions were rising. Iran launched missiles into Iraq on Monday, according to AP, targeting what it claimed to be an Israeli “spy headquarters” close to the US Consulate complex in the city of Irbil, which serves as the capital of the country’s northern semi-autonomous Kurdish region.

Iran referred to the attack, which claimed the lives of multiple civilians, as a “blatant violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty on Tuesday.

JAISH AL-ADL

With a large population of Sunni Baluchis and a porous border with Pakistan, southeast Iran is home to the Sunni Salafi separatist militant group Jaish al-Adl.

The group was founded in 2012 and Tehran classified it as a “terrorist organization.” In the intervening years, the group has attacked Iranian security forces several times.

Pakistan Responds

In an attempt to denounce the “unprovoked violation of its airspace” and to argue that the airstrikes were “illegal,” Pakistan called Tehran’s senior envoy to Islamabad. According to the country’s foreign ministry, the airstrikes claimed the lives of two children and injured three more.

Although the location of the explosions was not disclosed by the Pakistani foreign office, reports on social media indicated that they occurred in the Balochistan region, which is bordered by Iran and Pakistan by a distance of 1000 kilometres.

“This is a flagrant breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty that could have dire repercussions. Three girls were hurt and two innocent children died as a result, according to the Pakistani foreign ministry.

The fact that this illegal deed occurred in spite of Pakistan and Iran having many communication lines makes it even more worrisome. According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry, “Pakistan has always stated that terrorism is a common threat to all countries in the region that requires coordinated action.”
